Social Media As An Effective Tool

My effective tip this week, is how to use social media to your advantage.

In some ways, this week’s posting will tie into last week’s discussion on “Networking.” These two deliverables go hand-in-hand really, because it is all about how well you can use various sources and tools to your advantage in order to become better at the networking in everyday life.  Since technology, as we know it, has exponentially grown even in the last five years so has the popularity of social media sites. As much as I WISH I were as young as you GEN Y folks, I will be the first to admit that I tried to dodge the bullet of advancing technology and social media tools for as long as I could. I guess that can be a little difficult to avoid when you are taking a Business “Marketing” program where in today’s society if you are not using Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest or any other social media form – you better get on it, especially if you are a business seeking growth!  As much I have been reluctant to become an avid social media user, I must admit a part of me has become slightly relieved knowing how to use these multi-faceted tools. I believe my lack of adaptability plays a role on the user-anxiety that I was feeling just a short few weeks ago.

Okay, so let’s get to the point…since engaging myself with all of these versatile social media platforms, I think one of the most important things to consider is the capability that I now have to network, as well as receive new information on topics that I am interested in. With the existence of Twitter, Pinterest, and other sites I have the capacity to continually receive information after I followed, bookmarked, or favourited any topic that appeals to me.
By being proactive and following the companies that you are interested in – this information can be used to your advantage throughout your course of study. As you consistently absorb a little bit of information every day on the companies and/or topics (i.e. industries) you are interested in working for, these social media sites can be a great tool for you to enhance your knowledge on the company/industry. Additional research is also recommended when you finally land that interview, but you will also be “in the know” with company information and news you might not have otherwise been aware of.
